Disaster 7: Blizzards

Today I will be going over an area specific disaster, Blizzards. Blizzards happen in mountainous regions and in the northeast, but happen can happen in other places, it is uncommon though. Here is how you can prepare for this:
  • Have a radio/internet service: You will need to be able to keep in contact with news stations and be able to receive weather reports, so that you will have enough time to prepare for the up coming storm.
  • Have a food supply ready: You never know how long the blizzard will last, so keep canned foods and non-perishable foods in your home. Having anywhere from a weeks to a months supply of food would be recommended.
  • Close and board everything up: When the storm comes it will hit hard and it will be very cold. Blizzards have the potential of freezing your water supplies and pipes. You will want to make sure that your house is also insulated, to be able to stay warm. Closing the door, windows and everything else will stop any snow from coming in insuring the heat stays inside.
What is a blizzard?
A blizzard is when strong winds happen that are usually 35mph(Miles per hour) or more. Blizzards usually have snow aswell, but they do no need to have it to be considered a blizzard. Sometimes the blizzards strong winds just blow the snow from the ground causing low visibility.

Hopefully you will now be able to be prepared for a blizzard and survive. One important thing to remember is that during any disaster you will want to stay calmed. Being tense and worried will do nothing good for you and will just hinder you more. Until next week, BYE.
